"I would like to add my personal experience as a worker. I have attended the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Folk Magic Festival, and the 2nd Conjure Con. This is an exceptional group of presenters, Orion, Aunty Sindy, Susan, and Mamma Starr, each bringing their particular experience and practice of folk magic, conjure, and hoodoo, and what they do with that is extremely unique. They weave their personal, unique practices and experience with each others, to present an open-ended approach to the participants exposure to these crafts. They have a shared philosophy of keeping the cultures of these crafts alive, not in an orthodox way, but rather to enliven the American cultural richness found within conjure, spirit work, root doctoring, and all the many forms it is know as. They also draw out of the participant a confidence to grow your own relationship with these cultural practices through exploration of your personal ancestral work, relationships, and culture.

They do not attempt to rewrite the face of conjure, but rather explore the richness of its diversity through the perspectives of each presenter. This serves to keep the cultural back ground, of each presenter, alive and growing, as well as preserving the value of its parts. As a boy of southern decent, Mamma Starr Casas, and Orion Foxwood both have given me permission to reclaim my southern roots, Christian upbringing, and family folk lore, that has served to add power beyond measure to my work and practice as a Witch and Spirit Worker. Aunty Sindy Todo and Susan Diamond have both expanded my understanding as to what is possible for me as a practitioner and a person, through craft techniques and ways of living everyday life from a conjure/magical perspective. All 5 of the organizers (Susan, Sindy, Orion, Starr, and Shimmering Wolf) have dedicated their work to the cultural richness found in their personal practices, their personal cultural experiences, and bring this forward and share it lovingly to the Conjure Con and Folk Magic Festival family. They are growing a family (those who attend) an actual community from their work. This is one of the most loving, non-judgmental, supportive experiences I have had in my 20+ years of practicing magic. As the hoodoo and conjure movement sweeps the nation, I recommend gravitating towards those who have gotten their feet wet in the culture, grew up in it. Hoodoo and conjure (as taught by these folks) is a culture, not a practice, and this culture serves to lend the Spirit to the craft (as apposed to the craft lending the spirit to the culture). Without the culture there is no spirit. This amazing family, I am gifted to be apart of, are some of the most inspirited people I know, when I tell you they are filled with the Spirit, be prepared to have your socks blown off. At this last Folk Magic Festival I was actually taken by Spirit, and have been permanently altered by the experience. I love you all, and am proud to be family. XOXO"

What Past Attendees Have Said

  • I attended the first 2 Folk Magic Festivals. It is hard to put into words the full experience. The topics have ranged from cleansings, how to work with Black Hawk, The Bible in Conjure, Prosperity work, Love and Romance, Doll making...I can go on and on. The workshops are a mix of lecture and hands on experiences. Each of them also vend their wares and are happy to find time to chat with you about what they make and do. No where will you have a better opportunity to learn from these real and caring conjurers face-to-face and heart-to-heart. What I like most is they provide a lovely mix of backgrounds and knowledge from different perspectives. imageOrianna
